Eugene Tan carries on a widely varied practice with particular emphasis on criminal, civil, administrative and family law litigation in addition to assisting small businesses.  He also practices in real estate and estate planning.

Eugene has achieved a number of accomplishments in advocacy.  He was the first to successfully argue that workplace harassment could lead to a worker becoming disabled.  He appeared as counsel on a number of leading precedents in the area of employment law.   Recently, he has represented parties in a number of high-profile criminal matters.

Eugene has a passion for advocacy which has translated into his participation in many community groups.  He has served as president of the Chinese Society of Nova Scotia and president of Volleyball Nova Scotia.  He has also been a member of the Board of Directors for the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, the North End Health Clinic and the Nova Scotia Dragon Boat Association, which has raised over one million dollars in support of amateur sport in the province.  As a result of his community service, Eugene was profiled in The Society Record, the magazine of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, and he also recently received the Mayor’s Award in recognition of volunteer service.

Eugene has been active in professional development, and served as a chair of the Canadian Bar Association’s environmental law committee and the human rights committee.

Eugene graduated from the University of Western Ontario with an honours degree in neuroscience.  He attended law school at the University of New Brunswick.  While a law student, he received the Starr House Scholarship for community service and academic achievement, as well as the New Brunswick Trial Lawyers’ Prize for excellence in advocacy.

Eugene has been practicing law in Halifax since 1996 after having been called to the New Brunswick Bar.  He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Nova Scotia Bar in 1997.   Outside of the office, he has been an active coach in the sport of volleyball, and he has been a coach for the men’s volleyball team at the Canada Games in 2005 and 2009 and the Dalhousie Men’s team. He has also assisted the organizing committee of the 2011 FIVB junior world volleyball championships.  He is also a regular competitor in masters swimming events around Nova Scotia.

As an avid supporter of the arts, he has also played trombone with the Chebucto Big Band, which performs regularly at Atlantic Jazz Festival and at various venues in Halifax.
